item description

This is a fine and rare original antique ambrotype photograph of a young man standing next to a table, dated Meiji 26 = 1893, July 16. On the back of case written in bold kanji script is the man's name, Mikami Taminosuke. The place where the photographer's studio was located is also on the case, “Tokyo Asakusa Koen”. Asakusa Koen (Asakusa Park) in Tokyo was at one time an area of brothels.

During the Meiji era it was transformed into an entertainment area with amusement parks & public theaters. A number of photographers located in the area to photograph both the Geisha that worked in the surrounding shops and regular customers who frequented their establishments. Image Asakusa Koen Photograph - Family B is from the same family.

The ambrotype comes in a handcrafted polonia or kiri wood, full case (Berg 6-138, VR p. 460) with makers mark on the top, indicating an original matched case and cover. The image measures 2 .5 x 3.3 inches and the case is 3 x 4 inches. Both the ambrotype and case are in excellent condition.
