This is a very rare, small Japanese ambrotype from the Meiji Period, probably mid-1880s. The image shows a young man wearing the traditional kimono but also sporting a top hat. On the inside cover stamped in red ink is script that either identifies the photographer or the case maker. The image has some light crazing and separation of the emulsion.
The ambrotype comes in a handcrafted polonia or kiri wood, full case (Berg 6-138, VR p. 460) with makers mark on the top, indicating an original matched case and cover. The image measures 1.75 x 2.5 inches and the case is 2.25 x 3 inches. The case is in excellent condition.
