This mid Meiji Period ambrotype depicts a very wealthy and educated young man reading a book and wearing an unusual blend of Japanese and western clothing. Note that he is wearing shoes rather than the traditional the “geta” (wooden) sandals. They must have been very expensive because they are prominently displayed in the photograph.
The ambrotype comes in a handcrafted polonia or kiri wood, full case (Berg 6-138, VR p. 460) with makers mark on the top, indicating an original matched case and cover with the photographer’s paper label on the lid. The image measures 2.5 x 3.75 inches and the case is 3.25 x 4.5 inches. The photograph has superb clarity and tonality. Both the ambrotype and case are in very good condition.
