I have been collecting antique daguerreotype, ambrotype, and tintype photography and cases for a number of years. While I am more interested in adding to my collection, I occasionally sell photos and cases from my collection. Whenever I sell photos in the daguerreotype (wood and leather) cases, I will often make needed repairs to the case, (including replacement or repair of the inner and out hinges) using the same type of materials that were used by the original manufacturer. The original purpose of the cases was to protect the photograph and the fact that we can still find so many fine examples of these early photographs after all these years is a testament the quality of the cases. My philosophy concerning the repair daguerreotype cases is to make only the repairs necessary that will allow the case to continue to do the job for which it was originally designed, which is to provide safe storage for these wonderful pieces of photographic art. It is my goal to maintain the historic quality of the case whenever possible.
